WHAT IS CORONOVIRUS INFECTION COVID-19?
Coronavirus is an acute viral disease characterized by a predominant lesion of the respiratory system and the gastrointestinal tract. Coronavirus is a zoonotic infection by origin.
It is transmitted mainly by airborne droplets as a result of inhalation of droplets released from the patient’s respiratory tract, for example by coughing or sneezing, as well as droplets of saliva or nasal discharge. It can also spread when the patient touches any contaminated surface, such as a door handle. In this case, infection occurs when you touch your mouth, nose or eyes with dirty hands.
For most coronavirus infections, the incubation period is limited to 2-3 days. However, for the coronavirus COVID-19, this period can be from 1 to 14 days (an average of 10 days).
Symptoms of coronavirus infection COVID-19
The main symptoms of coronavirus are fever(37,5 °C and higher), sneezing, cough, difficult breathing. In most cases, the disease proceeds in a mild form. It is reported that patients with mild symptoms usually recover within a week. Severe forms of the disease are more likely to develop in older people and in people with certain concomitant diseases, including asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
There are currently no vaccines for the prevention or specific antiviral treatment of coronavirus infection COVID-19, since the disease is caused by a new virus. In this regard, people have no acquired immunity to it.
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to follow personal hygiene. Keep your hands clean, wash them often with soap and water, or use a disinfectant. Try not to touch your mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands (usually such touches are unconsciously performed by us on average 15 times per hour). During a period of high morbidity, it is necessary to limit contacts with surrounding people as much as possible, to avoid crowds, not to visit crowded places.
Treatment of mild or moderate coronavirus includes symptomatic treatment – drugs to decrease the temperature, antitussive drugs, colds, etc.
The treatment of severe forms of coronavirus is based on drug therapy. It includes rotivoviral drugs, specific immunoglobulins, corticosteroids.
Corticosteroids are prescribed for progressive worsening of the clinical picture, prolonged lymphopenia, and a decrease in blood oxygen saturation.
If a bacterial secondary infection is detected and serious complications are developed, antibiotics and artificial pulmonary ventilation are indicated.
